The invisible giants shaping our weather are massive bodies of air

What is an Air Mass? · 3:14 · Video: Mike Sammartano · Watch at the source

In short: Beyond the wind and rain lies a much larger structure: the air mass. These enormous bodies of air, spanning thousands of kilometres, carry uniform temperature and humidity. When they collide, they create the dramatic boundaries we recognize as weather fronts.

An air mass is a vast body of air characterized by nearly uniform temperature and humidity at any specific altitude. These masses can extend horizontally for hundreds or even thousands of kilometres, sometimes reaching as high as the top of the troposphere. In North America, these masses are categorized by their origin and moisture levels, such as Continental Arctic, Maritime Tropical, and Continental Polar masses.

The boundaries where these different masses meet are known as fronts. Meteorologists during World War I compared the weather flares along these zones to the battle lines in Europe. A cold front occurs when dense, cold air advances, undercutting warmer air and forcing it upward. This process often triggers rapid movement—between 50 to 65 km per hour—and can lead to thunderstorms or even squall lines of tornadoes up to 80 km ahead of the surface position.

In contrast, a warm front occurs when warm air overrides a retreating cold mass. Because warm air is less dense, it does not displace the cold air as aggressively, resulting in a much shallower slope and slower movement. These fronts often bring widespread, uniform precipitation. In extreme winter scenarios, if warm air overrides subfreezing cold air, severe ice storms can develop more than 100 km ahead of the surface position. When a cold front eventually overtakes a warm front, the system becomes an occluded front, signaling a shift in the storm's kinetic energy.
