The hidden electrical balance that defines every atom in existence
In short: Most atoms are perfectly balanced, but they can become electrically charged by shifting just a few tiny particles. This video explains the fundamental transition from neutral atoms to ions.
Atoms typically maintain a neutral state because they possess an equal number of protons, which carry a positive charge, and electrons, which carry a negative charge. When an atom gains or loses electrons, this balance is disrupted, creating an ion.
The resulting charge depends on the movement of these electrons: losing electrons creates a positive ion called a cation, while acquiring extra electrons results in a negative ion known as an anion.
