Why we haven't run out of oil despite burning it for centuries
In short: In 1977, many predicted a looming oil crisis that would define our lifetime. Yet, we have more oil today than we did then. The secret isn't a hidden stash of ancient fossils, but a relentless technological race to squeeze every last drop from the earth.
The misconception that we are nearing an end to oil is largely an accounting error. In 1977, based on known reserves and consumption rates, some calculated we would run out within 40 years. However, 'proved reserves' are not a fixed geological limit; they are an accounting concept based only on known, currently viable projects. As technology advances, what was once 'unreachable' becomes 'extractable,' causing global reserves to increase over time.
Modern engineering has fundamentally shifted the timeline. The longevity of aged wells has been increased through methods such as lateral drilling, deeper penetration, and the application of high-pressure water to extract remaining resources. Furthermore, the perfection of fracking allowed for the extraction of oil from shale rock. The United States alone holds trillions of gallons of oil in shale—nearly 10 times the amount in Saudi Arabia. Combined with Canada's extractable tar sands, these vast reserves suggest we may never truly run out until we perfect inexhaustible energy sources like solar or nuclear fusion.
Current estimates suggest known reserves might last about 50 years, while some projections suggest a longer window of roughly 100 years based on a consumption rate of about 35 billion barrels per year. The challenge is not just availability, but the economic and environmental cost. Because oil remains cheap and abundant, there is often less financial incentive to transition to greener alternatives, creating a cycle where we enjoy modern life's cheap plastics and transport while facing the long-term consequences of carbon dioxide emissions.
