One-third of humanity faces hunger while one-fifth of food is wasted
In short: We live in a world of staggering contradictions. While billions struggle to find their next meal, a massive portion of our global food supply is discarded. This waste isn't just a moral issue; it is a systemic failure that drains our economies and accelerates environmental decay.
The scale of global food waste is immense. According to the Food Waste Index 2024, over 1 billion tons of food were wasted in 2022 alone. This represents roughly 17 percent of all food available for human consumption. This massive inefficiency stands in sharp contrast to the fact that one-third of the global population currently grapples with food insecurity. By addressing the gaps in how we produce, distribute, and consume food, we can build more resilient food systems that promote security for everyone.
The environmental consequences are equally severe. When food is discarded, it contributes to climate change in two primary ways: the release of greenhouse gases—such as methane—as it breaks down in landfills, and the wasted energy and resources used during its initial production.
Roughly 18 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were produced by discarded food and beverages in Britain during 2021. Furthermore, waste contributes to biodiversity loss, making it a critical hurdle for reaching global climate and biodiversity targets. Economically, the cost is staggering. The annual value of wasted food is estimated to exceed $1 trillion globally. In the UK, the edible parts of household food waste alone were valued at £17 billion in 2021, which translates to about £250 per person each year. Reducing this waste is not just about being 'green'; it is about unlocking economic opportunities, enhancing resource efficiency, and moving toward a sustainable future where we value the effort and materials required to produce what we eat.
