Should wealthy nations delay boosters to prevent new virus variants?

Why Some Countries Are Delaying COVID Booster Shots · 7:17 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: As some countries prepare for booster shots, others are still struggling to provide a single dose. This creates a global dilemma: is it better to protect the already vaccinated, or prioritize the under-vaccinated to stop the emergence of more dangerous variants?

The global vaccination effort faces a complex mathematical and ethical challenge. Researchers have modeled vaccination strategies to determine how to maximize the number of effectively vaccinated people. For two-dose schedules, if the second injection's effectiveness is under double that of the first, postponing the subsequent dose maximizes the total number of individuals gaining at least partial immunity.

However, this strategy is not universal. The emergence of the highly contagious delta variant has changed the calculus, as the reduced efficacy of a single dose against this variant makes extended intervals less viable. While some countries, like Israel, began offering Pfizer boosters five months after the last shot, and Hungary became the first European nation to offer them in August, others are facing different pressures.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern that prioritizing boosters in high-vaccination areas could inadvertently foster more dangerous coronavirus variants. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has urged countries to delay boosters until nations with low vaccination rates can inoculate their populations. This debate is heightened by the fact that in many African nations, less than 2 percent of the population has received even a single dose.

Although experts fret over declining immunity—as certain research indicates antibody concentrations fall roughly six months post-primary series—insufficient evidence exists to prove a major drop in severe illness protection for most healthy youths. This has led to intense debate over whether offering boosters to healthy populations is an efficient use of limited global supplies.
