Why thousands of tiny shrimp risk their lives to walk on land

Why Thai Shrimps Parade on Land · 4:09 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: Every year during the rainy season, the banks of Thailand's rivers host a bizarre nocturnal procession. Thousands of freshwater shrimp emerge from the water to march across dry land. For decades, this was a local mystery, but new research finally explains the survival strategy behind this risky parade.

The phenomenon occurs in northeastern Thailand, specifically along the Lamdom River in Ubon Ratchathani Province. During the wet months of August to October, thousands of crustaceans of the species Macrobrachium dienbienphuense emerge from the thundering waters of the Lamduan Rapids. While the behavior has long been a staple of local folklore, statues, and even traditional dances, it remained largely unstudied by the scientific community until recently.

Biologist Watcharapong Hongjamrassilp led a multi-season study to decode the mystery. By using time-lapse night cameras to observe hundreds of thousands of shrimp, his team discovered a specific environmental trigger: water current strength. The research suggests that the shrimp are not simply wandering; they are navigating. The more powerful the river current, the more likely the shrimp are to leave the water, crawl onto the rocky banks, and walk upstream to areas where the water is calmer.

This behavior represents a calculated risk. While on land, these thumbnail-sized shrimp are highly vulnerable to predators. However, the study indicates that the 'parade' is a detour to avoid being swept away by overwhelming currents. Understanding this life cycle is now critical for conservation, as the population of these parading shrimp has been observed to be declining in recent years.

The study, published in the Journal of Zoology, provides a rare look at how specific environmental pressures can drive unique evolutionary behaviors. It highlights how even small organisms develop complex navigation strategies to survive extreme conditions, turning a seemingly random march into a vital survival tactic.
