The oldest university building west of the Mississippi is still in use
In short: Hidden in plain sight in Salem, Oregon, stands a redbrick structure that survived a fire and a state government relocation. It is a rare architectural survivor, serving as a living link to the mid-19th century while hosting modern students today.
Willamette University, founded in 1842, holds the distinction of being the oldest private university west of the Mississippi River. Its roots trace back to the Oregon Institute, established by missionary Jason Lee. The school originally served as an educational outpost for the children of missionaries, but it eventually expanded its scope significantly.
Waller Hall stands on the campus, currently holding the title of the Mississippi River's westernmost active university edifice. Finished during 1844, this three-story timber construction ranked among the Pacific Northwest's biggest edifices of that era. It even hosted the first session of the state legislature in 1851 after the capital moved to Salem. After the original frame structure burned down in 1872, a new brick building was finished in 1867. This building was later renamed Waller Hall in 1912 to honor Reverend Alvin F. Waller.
Today, the university maintains a diverse academic profile. While it remains affiliated with the United Methodist Church, it is not religiously oriented. The institution serves more than 2,400 students, with over 1,600 undergraduates. Its academic offerings range from traditional arts and sciences to specialized fields like computer science and environmental sciences. Notably, the university requires freshmen and sophomores to live on campus, fostering a close-knit community in its 60-acre urban setting.
