How a horse-drawn hack evolved into a multi-billion dollar transportation giant
In short: In 1906, Cleve Harrell was hauling passengers through Oklahoma City with a single horse-drawn hack. Decades later, his legacy would expand into a massive North American logistics empire, only to face a dramatic collapse fueled by massive debt and controversial federal emergency loans.
The origins of Yellow Corporation trace back to Grover Cleveland "Cleve" Harrell, who started a taxi business in Oklahoma City in 1906. After transitioning from horses to a Model T Ford, Harrell painted his vehicles yellow in 1918—a move that initially drew ridicule but ultimately became a booming brand. The company's reach expanded significantly through the 20th century, moving from local taxicabs and bus lines into freight, eventually pioneering the consolidation of small shipments into trailer loads.
The company's modern era was defined by aggressive, debt-fueled expansion. In 2003, Yellow acquired Roadway Corporation for $1.05 billion, and in 2005, it spent $1.5 billion to acquire USF Corp. These moves drove revenues to a high of $9.9 billion in 2006. However, the strategy of acquiring competitors without achieving full operational integration created long-term financial strain. By 2009, the company had only achieved three profitable quarters since 2009, and it struggled with massive net losses in both 2008 and 2009.
The company's final chapter was marked by political and financial controversy. In 2020, YRC Worldwide received a $700 million emergency loan under the CARES Act, with the U.S. Treasury taking a 29.6% equity stake. Despite this lifeline, the company's financial instability persisted. By July 30, 2023, Yellow ceased operations due to ongoing financial problems, leaving the federal government owed $730 million. The collapse highlighted the complexities of managing massive labor unions and the risks of large-scale corporate restructuring.
