How to master the first moves of a chess game

3 Basic Opening Strategy Principles | Chess · 3:02 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Entering a chess match can be overwhelming when you face a board full of pieces. To build a strong and confident opening, you must move beyond aimless play by following three fundamental strategic principles: controlling the center, developing your pieces, and ensuring your king's safety.

The first priority in any opening is establishing control over the four central squares. These squares act as a control center for the entire board. A piece's power is significantly amplified when it occupies the center; for instance, a knight placed in the middle can control up to eight different squares, whereas the same knight positioned on the edge of the board might only control four. Occupying these central squares provides a significant advantage. This strategic positioning allows your pieces to exert maximum influence over the board's layout.

Once center control is established, the next step is piece development. This involves giving your pieces a job by bringing them out from their starting positions and toward the center. A common and effective sequence is to develop your knights before your bishops. Effective development involves moving pieces toward the center rather than toward the edges, such as avoiding a knight move to H-3. A standard approach is to move your knights to F-3 and C-3. This specific movement helps direct your forces towards the middle of the board.

The final pillar of a successful opening is king safety. Because the king is the most vulnerable piece, it must be protected, much like a baby in a crib. The most effective way to achieve this protection at the start of a game is by castling. Players have the option to castle on either the king's side or the queen's side, moving the king two spaces and bringing the rook to the other side to create a defensive fortress. Castling can be performed on the queen's side as well. This maneuver secures your monarch behind a protective barrier.
