Why your finger placement dictates the arc of an arrow
In short: In traditional archery, the arrow shaft is your only guide. Without modern sights, the height of your hand on your face determines the trajectory of your shot. By shifting your finger just a few millimeters, you can transform a flat strike into a high, sweeping arc that reaches distant targets.
When using a traditional bow without modern sights, the archer must manually calculate the trajectory of the arrow based on the angle of release. This is achieved by moving the fingers along the string during the pull-back phase. For close-range targets, the fingers are positioned lower on the string, resulting in a lower angle. As the distance increases, the archer must move their fingers higher up the string—sometimes even above the arrow shaft—to create a steeper upward angle that allows the arrow to travel further and fall into the bullseye.
The mechanics of this 'hit and miss' method rely on finding the specific anchor point on the face that corresponds to the desired distance. For example, moving the finger placement from the lip to under the jaw can provide the necessary height for even longer shots. This manual adjustment requires the archer to intuitively understand how the physical position of their hand alters the arrow's path, essentially using their own body as a variable sight to compensate for gravity over distance.
Modern archery simplifies this mechanical complexity through the use of bow sights. These devices replace the need for manual finger manipulation by using a sight pin and a rear peep sight. Instead of moving their hand on their face, an archer can mechanically adjust the sight pin to a specific distance, such as 20 yards. When aiming at a further distance like 60 yards, the archer aligns the lower pin with the target, allowing the bow to automatically calculate and set the correct angle for the shot.
