From aerospace engineering to the shortest tenure as Malaysia's Leader of the Opposition
In short: Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar is a rare breed of politician: a trained aerospace engineer who pivoted from academia to lead the state of Terengganu. Yet, his most notable political milestone is a record-breakingly brief stint as Leader of the Opposition, a position he held for less than a month.
Born in 1970, Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar built a career in high-altitude engine failure and combustion research before entering politics. After earning his PhD from the University of Leeds in 2001, he served as a lecturer and head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Universiti Putra Malaysia. His academic background made him a prime candidate for the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) as they sought to modernize their image by recruiting technocrats to lead their political agenda.
His political rise began in 2008 as a secretary to PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang, eventually leading to his appointment as the 15th Menteri Besar of Terengganu in 2018. He solidified his position by securing a clean sweep of all 32 state assembly seats in 2023. However, his tenure has not been without controversy; in 2022, he faced public criticism for traveling to New Zealand while his home state suffered from severe flooding.
In 2026, Ahmad Samsuri achieved a peculiar place in Malaysian history. Following the expulsion of Hamzah Zainudin from his party, Ahmad Samsuri was named the 18th Leader of the Opposition on 16 May 2026. His tenure lasted only 28 days, ending on 13 June 2026. During this period, he never attended a parliamentary session, meaning he never formally sat in the opposition leader's chair. He was succeeded by Hamzah Zainudin, marking the shortest term for any individual in that role.
