Can a chemical engineer turn Malaysia into a leader for renewable energy and sustainability?
In short: Yeo Bee Yin transitioned from a career in the energy industry to a prominent political role, applying data-driven engineering principles to national governance. As a former minister, she spearheaded ambitious reforms in renewable energy and environmental protection, famously declaring that Malaysia would not serve as the world's plastic dumping ground.
Born in rural Johor in 1983, Yeo Bee Yin viewed education as her primary path to advancement. After graduating with first-class honours in chemical engineering from Universiti Teknologi Petronas, she worked as a field engineer for Schlumberger. She later earned an MPhil in Advanced Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. This technical background became the foundation for her political philosophy, which emphasizes evidence-based policymaking and institutional reform.
Yeo entered politics in 2012, joining the Democratic Action Party. Her electoral debut in 2013 for the Damansara Utama state seat resulted in a landslide victory, securing the largest majority for any state legislative seat in that election. By 2018, she was elected to the federal parliament and appointed Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change. In this role, she managed a broad portfolio that included climate commitments, renewable energy expansion, and national innovation strategies.
Her ministerial tenure was marked by aggressive environmental and energy policies. She reformed the Net Energy Metering programme to boost rooftop solar adoption and implemented the Large Scale Solar competitive bidding programme to lower electricity costs. Perhaps most notably, she confronted the issue of illegal plastic waste imports. In 2019, she ordered the repatriation of 3,000 tonnes of contaminated plastic waste to countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, asserting that Malaysia would not be a global dumping ground.
Beyond environmental policy, Yeo focused on preparing Malaysia for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In 2019, she launched a national policy framework targeting advancements in artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things. Currently, as the chair of a parliamentary committee, she continues to advocate for policy improvements in areas such as child protection and women's leadership, maintaining her commitment to applying analytical rigor to complex social and governance challenges.
