In short: Daim Zainuddin was a central figure in Malaysian finance, serving twice as Minister of Finance under Mahathir Mohamad. While credited with steering the nation through the 1997 Asian financial crisis, his later years were defined by high-stakes anti-corruption probes and a posthumous acquittal regarding his vast, undisclosed asset portfolio.

Born in 1938 in Alor Setar, Daim Zainuddin rose from humble beginnings to become one of Malaysia's most influential and wealthiest individuals. After studying law in London and urban planning at Berkeley, he transitioned into business, founding Syarikat Maluri Sdn Bhd in 1973. His real estate ventures helped shape the landscape of Kuala Lumpur, while his banking acquisitions, including the formation of the Malaysian-French Bank, solidified his financial power. By the time of his death in 2024, his business empire spanned over 30 companies, ranging from luxury hospitality to international commercial banking.

Daim's political career was equally significant. As Finance Minister from 1984 to 1991 and 1999 to 2001, he was a key architect of Malaysia's economic strategy. His tenure saw a dramatic recovery in national performance, with GDP growth shifting from a negative 1.03% in 1985 to 9.06% by 1989. Despite his contributions, his later years were marked by political friction. After supporting the opposition Pakatan Harapan coalition in 2018, he was expelled from the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the party he had served as treasurer for nearly two decades.

The final chapter of his life was dominated by legal scrutiny. Following investigations linked to the Pandora and Panama Papers, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) demanded he declare his assets. His refusal led to the seizure of the 58-storey Ilham Tower and criminal charges in January 2024 for failing to declare 71 assets, including numerous properties and companies. Daim maintained that these actions were politically motivated. Following his death in November 2024 at age 86, the prosecution withdrew all charges, resulting in a posthumous acquittal. Nevertheless, investigations into his assets and those of his family continue, underscoring the enduring controversy surrounding his immense wealth and influence.
