Why your circular knitting might be pulling (and how to fix it)

Distribute Stitches on 2-Pointed Needles | Circular Knitting · 5:13 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Knitting in the round on double-pointed needles or two circulars requires more than just counting stitches. If you don't balance the types of stitches across your needles, you risk creating tension issues that distort your fabric. Mastering the art of redistribution ensures a smooth, professional finish.

When using double-pointed needles (DPNs), magic loops, or two circular needles, the distribution of stitches matters significantly more than it does on a single short circular needle. On a short circular, all stitches reside on one cable, but with DPNs, you must manually manage how many stitches sit on each needle cord. A common goal is to keep these numbers relatively balanced; for instance, having 20 stitches on one needle and only 12 on another can cause noticeable pulling in the knitted fabric.

The real challenge lies in stitch types—specifically when working patterns like knit two, purl two ribbing. Because many knitters find it difficult to identify yarn placement when starting a needle with a purl stitch, it is often preferable to ensure every needle begins with a knit stitch. This creates a consistent flow of movement and prevents confusion about whether the yarn should be in the front or back.

To achieve this balance without ruining your pattern count, there are three primary methods for redistribution. You can 'work' the stitches by knitting or purling them onto an adjacent needle to move their position. Alternatively, you can perform a 'cheat' by slipping finished purl stitches onto the back needle as you finish a row. Finally, you can redistribute without working the stitches at all by 'scooting' your proceeding needle and slipping stitches over from the right (as if to purl), moving them to the end of the previous needle to clear the start of the new one.

Ultimately, while minor imbalances in stitch counts are often acceptable, intentional redistribution ensures that each needle starts with a knit stitch. This technique keeps the tension even and makes the process of working complex ribbing much more intuitive for the knitter.
