The subtle art of turning straight stitches into a seamless circle

How to Join the Round on 2-Pointed Needles | Circular Knitting · 3:29 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Knitting in the round with double-pointed needles offers precision, but the transition from a flat row to a continuous loop is deceptively tricky. Mastering the join requires more than just skill; it requires a specific sequence of needle placement and yarn management to avoid a visible gap.

The challenge of using double-pointed needles (DPNs) lies in the distribution of stitches. Unlike circular needles, which hold a long strand of stitches in a single line, DPNs require you to divide your cast-on stitches across multiple needles. A common, simple method involves using 30 stitches, which allows for an even distribution of 10 stitches per needle. To begin, you must first take an empty needle and slip one-third of your stitches—for example, the first 10—as if to purl, letting them hang loose.

Once the first group is set aside, you repeat the process with a second empty needle, picking up the next segment of stitches, such as stitches 11 through 20. This leaves you with a structured set of needles, each holding a specific portion of the total count. At this stage, the stitches are distributed, but the loop is not yet closed. The structural integrity of the circle depends on how you bridge the gap between the very first stitch and the most recent one.

The most critical step is the join itself. To avoid knitting stitches back onto the original needle, you must position the needles so that the first stitch is in your left hand and the most recent stitch—with the yarn end trailing—is in your right. You then insert a new empty needle into stitch number one. Crucially, you must connect the loop by knitting the yarn coming from the ball end (not the tail end) onto this new needle. By passing the stitches from the full needle to the empty one through this specific knitting motion, you successfully establish a continuous, seamless round.
