Why commercial modeling is often more lucrative than high fashion
In short: Many aspiring models chase the prestige of Vogue or Calvin Klein, but they might be overlooking a more accessible path. Commercial modeling offers a different kind of success: you might never become a household name, but you can work constantly and earn significant income across the country.
In the modeling industry, there is a fundamental distinction between editorial fashion and commercial work. Editorial modeling is closely tied to high fashion, often revolving around specific markets and events like Fashion Week. This path is highly specialized and requires being present in specific hubs to cater to designers and high-end publications.
Commercial modeling, by contrast, is much more accessible and widespread. Instead of walking in a designer's show or appearing in a luxury magazine, commercial models work for various brands and catalogs. Because these clients are found everywhere—from Los Angeles and Chicago to Dallas and Miami—the work is geographically diverse. A production might hire a principal model from New York but utilize local models in Florida to complete a shoot.
The nature of the work itself differs significantly. While fashion focuses on a specific aesthetic, commercial models often succeed by being nondescript or versatile. They are categorized by specific traits, such as being 'the blonde girl,' 'the brunette girl,' or even 'the girl that looks great in blue.' This versatility allows them to serve a vast array of clients, from online catalog companies to various commercial brands.
Even the technical execution varies. The poses, stances, and methods used to showcase clothing are distinct between the two fields. While fashion is a longer, more specialized road, commercial modeling offers the beauty of constant, widespread opportunity for those who can master its specific requirements.
