In short: The name Fuso is rooted in ancient mythology, referring to a sacred hibiscus tree where the sun rises. Today, that name represents a massive industrial legacy, evolving from a single 1932 bus into a global powerhouse of heavy-duty trucks and buses through decades of mergers and complex corporate shifts.

The company's identity began in 1932 with the construction of the first B46 bus at the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company's Kobe Works. Over the following decades, the entity underwent significant transformations. In 1950, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was split into three distinct companies, eventually leading to the formation of Mitsubishi Fuso Heavy Industries in 1964. This era was defined by complex partnerships, including a joint venture with Chrysler Corporation in 1970 to establish Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC). During this period, the original Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company was renamed Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Furthermore, the motor-vehicle operations were relocated from the Kobe Works to the Tokyo Works in 1937.

The modern Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) was officially established in 2003 after being spun off from Mitsubishi Motors. Its ownership history is a web of international interests. While DaimlerChrysler held a significant stake, a 2005 agreement saw Mitsubishi Motors transfer its shares to DaimlerChrysler following quality and recall issues. By 2006, the headquarters moved from Tokyo to Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa, and the company became part of Daimler Truck. The corporation's relocation to Kawasaki-shi occurred in 2006. Additionally, the company's product distribution was previously managed by Mitsubishi Fuso Motor Sales to leverage established brand recognition.

Recent years have seen further consolidation. Following a 2023 memorandum of understanding with Hino and Toyota, a plan was set to merge the two into a single holding company. This culminated in April 2026, when Fuso became a subsidiary of the newly formed Archion. Today, Fuso's reach is truly global, manufacturing vehicles in diverse locations ranging from Indonesia and Egypt to India and Portugal, serving markets from Latin America to Oceania. The company's diverse manufacturing footprint includes facilities in Malaysia and Thailand for the TV model. Furthermore, the Canter Eco Hybrid utilizes a parallel hybrid system to improve high-speed efficiency.
