In short: Deep Impact wasn't just a champion; he was a cultural phenomenon that transcended the racetrack. From being an overlooked yearling to becoming Japan’s most dominant sire, his legacy is etched in world records and a lineage of champions across four continents.

Born on March 25, 2002, at Northern Farm in Hokkaido, Deep Impact was initially undervalued. He was the ninth highest bidder out of 14 Sunday Silence foals because his slender stature made him less appealing to buyers. His owner, Makoto Kaneko, purchased him for ¥70 million, moved by a 'sparkle' in the horse's eyes that felt like it could suck one in. This initial spark led to a name intended to signify a profound impact on the public.

His racing career was defined by historic milestones. In 2005, he became the first horse since Narita Brian in 1994 to complete the Japanese Triple Crown. He achieved this with an undefeated run, tying a race record of 2:23.3 in the Tōkyō Yūshun (Japanese Derby). His prowess was international; in 2006, he traveled to France for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe as a heavy favorite, attracting over €1.5 million in bets from fans who traveled across the globe to see him.

While his racing career ended with a disqualification due to a positive test for Ipratropium and a subsequent retirement deal worth 5.1 billion yen, his influence as a stallion was even more profound. He stood at the Shadai Stallion Station from 2012 to 2022, becoming Japan's leading sire for 11 consecutive years. He produced 59 Group 1 winners and sired Contrail, who in 2020 became the first horse in history for a father and son to both win the Triple Crown undefeated.
