How liquid defies gravity to move upward without a pump

In short: A siphon can drain a glass without ever tipping it. By using a bent tube with unequal legs, this mechanism allows liquid to travel upward, over a reservoir's edge, and down to a lower level. It is a fundamental principle used in everything from classroom demos to modern plumbing.

The mechanism of a siphon relies on a delicate balance of forces. When a tube is filled with liquid and positioned with one end higher than the other, gravity begins to pull the liquid down the longer leg. This downward movement creates a temporary vacuum or lowers the pressure within the bend of the tube. As the liquid moves, atmospheric pressure on the higher side pushes the remaining liquid up and over the bend to fill the void.

However, the science is often debated. While some suggest atmospheric pressure is the primary driver, other perspectives suggest the process depends on cohesive forces that prevent the liquid columns from breaking apart under their own weight. Notably, a siphon can actually function in a vacuum, suggesting that atmospheric pressure is not the sole requirement for the effect to occur.

This principle is vital for modern infrastructure and sanitation. In a household toilet, the sudden rush of water from the tank into the bowl activates a siphon via the drain's shape, pulling waste into the sewer system. Beyond the bathroom, civil engineers utilize siphons in industrial piping and in aqueducts to transport water across valleys to reach population centers.

The flow will continue until one of three conditions is met: the source container becomes empty, the liquid levels in both containers reach equilibrium, or air enters the shorter end of the tube, breaking the continuous column of liquid.
