Why lowering your thermostat by just one degree saves 1% of fuel

In short: It feels counterintuitive to let your home get colder or warmer while you are away. However, the physics of heat transfer prove that small adjustments to your target temperature can significantly slash your energy bills without compromising your comfort when you return.

The core principle behind thermostat setbacks is the management of 'Delta T'—the temperature difference between the inside of your home and the outside environment. During the winter, heat naturally moves from your warm interior to the cold exterior. By lowering your target temperature, you reduce this difference, which slows the rate of heat loss. For example, if it is zero degrees outside and you drop your indoor target from 70 degrees to 60 degrees, you significantly decrease the amount of heat escaping your home.

Quantitatively, the Department of Energy suggests that for every single degree you lower your target temperature, you can save approximately 1% of fuel over an eight-hour period. In a scenario where you drop the temperature by 10 degrees, you could see a 10% reduction in your heating bill. This works in reverse during the summer: raising the thermostat prevents your air-conditioning system from running constantly, lowering your electrical costs. Crucially, the energy required to reheat a home after a setback is always less than the energy consumed by a system running continuously to maintain a constant temperature.

However, these savings are not universal. Certain home configurations can negate the benefits of a setback. Experts warn against using programmable clock thermostats with electric heat pumps, radiant-heat systems with long recovery times, or homes with extremely tight building envelopes. In these specific cases, the mechanics of the heating source or the insulation level make the standard setback strategy less effective or impractical.
