Why your bicycle shifting feels sluggish and how to fix it

Installing Shifting Cables & Housing | Bicycle Repair · 3:36 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Corrosion, rust, and trapped grit can turn a smooth gear change into a mechanical struggle. Replacing your cables and housing is a fundamental skill, but the secret to a perfect installation lies in the subtle details of threading and tensioning.

Over time, metal cables succumb to corrosion and rust, while sand and dirt accumulate inside the housing. This buildup prevents smooth movement, compromising both braking and shifting performance. Replacing these components is essential for maintaining control and precision, but the process requires more than just swapping parts; it requires careful routing and tension management.

The installation begins by threading the cable through the entrance point while the chain is in its highest gear. This can be a tactile challenge; depending on the brand, you may need to use a flashlight or manipulate the shifter hoods to see the path. For instance, SRAM shifters may require significant bending, whereas Campagnolo shifters might be easier to navigate by pulling the hood in the opposite direction. Once the cable passes the initial housing, you must ensure the correct ferrule is applied. These end caps come in 4mm or 5mm sizes and in both plastic and metal; it is vital to use the version specifically designed for either shifters or brakes.

After threading the cable through all necessary housing slots to the derailleur, secure it to the bolt using a 5mm hex wrench. A critical, often overlooked step is addressing 'cable stretch.' Because new cables have not yet been tensioned, you should perform several gentle shifts or manually pull on the cable to stretch it, then readjust the tension. Finally, trim the excess cable, leaving approximately 2 to 3 inches to allow for future adjustments and tool clearance. Always finish the end with a tip to prevent fraying, and test the entire system on a stand or upside down before your first ride.
