Why your circular knitting might look uneven and how to fix it

How to Avoid Jogs | Circular Knitting · 4:01 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: When knitting in the round, your stitches can create a visible, stair-step jump known as a jog. While it looks like a mistake, this helical shift is often an inherent part of the process. Learn how to manage these transitions to achieve a seamless, professional finish.

Circular knitting functions much like a helix rather than the stacked, brick-like rows found in flat knitting. In flat knitting, rows stack vertically like lines on notebook paper. In contrast, circular knitting involves bending that pattern into a continuous spiral. This movement can create a 'helix jump' where one stitch appears taller than its neighbor, creating an offset or 'jog' at the start of a new round.

This unevenness is particularly noticeable when using two different colored yarns. For example, if you are alternating red and black stitches to create a checkerboard pattern, the transition point between rounds can look noticeably higher or lower. However, this height difference is often temporary. As you continue to build the row, the extra height is distributed, and the stitches eventually even out.

If the visual disruption is too prominent, there are practical ways to mitigate it. During the knitting process, you can gently tug on the stitches at the beginning and end of the round to pull them into alignment. For a more permanent solution, use the blocking process. When the finished piece—such as a mitten or headband—is wet and pliable, you can manually pull the higher point down and the lower point up. Once the fabric dries, the jog is effectively smoothed out.

Ultimately, many knitters find that these shifts are nearly invisible once the project is finished and blocked, as the eye tends to read the continuous circle as one fluid movement.
