Why knitting in the round requires a different math for your fabric

How to Knit a Circular Gauge Swatch | Circular Knitting · 4:21 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: If you knit a standard flat swatch to plan a circular sweater, your measurements will be wrong. Because circular knitting eliminates purl stitches, it changes the tension and yarn usage of the fabric. To get an accurate gauge, you must use a specific trick to mimic round knitting on a flat surface.

In traditional flat knitting, a stockinet stitch is created by alternating knit and purl rows. However, when knitting in the round, the entire piece consists of only knit stitches because there is no 'back' side to work into. This structural difference means that a standard flat swatch—which includes purls—will not accurately represent the tension or yarn consumption of a circular project. Using an incorrect swatch can lead to garments that are sized improperly or have unexpected density.

To solve this without knitting a full circle, you can create a single-layer swatch using a 'float' technique. You knit across the front of the row as usual until you reach the end of your needle. Instead of turning the work, you pull the left-hand needle through to the other side and bring the yarn around in a very loose strand, known as a float. By keeping this float loose, you ensure the fabric remains flat enough for measurement while maintaining the 'knit-only' tension of circular knitting.

The process involves casting on a sufficient number of stitches—for example, 32 stitches to cover at least four inches—and repeating the float method at the end of every row. Once finished, the swatch is washed and dried according to the final garment's care instructions. You then use a knit check or ruler to count the stitches per inch. If the fabric is too dense, you should increase your needle size; if it is too loose, you must decrease it.

This method provides a truer representation of how specific yarn and needles interact in a circular context, ensuring that the final piece matches the intended dimensions.
