The engineering behind a stable backyard fire pit

How to Build a Fire Pit | This Old House · 5:32 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Building a fire pit requires more than just placing stones. This guide walks through a professional landscaping approach to create a durable, well-drained oasis for cold weather.

Landscape contractor Roger Cook demonstrates how to construct a campfire pit using a kit of concrete pavers and a steel ring. The process begins with a shallow pit slightly wider than the fire area, featuring a secondary deeper hole in the center filled with 3/4" stone to ensure proper drainage.

The foundation is built by compacting a mixture of stone and stone dust with a hand tamper. To ensure structural integrity, the curved concrete pavers are installed in staggered rows, glued with masonry adhesive, and then backfilled with topsoil to restore the surrounding turf.
