Why every inch of a small backyard requires intentional design
In short: In a cramped outdoor space, there is no room for careless placement. Every feature must serve a specific purpose. Landscape contractor Jenn Nawada and mason Mark McCullough demonstrate how to transform a limited Georgia backyard by building a stone fire pit, a project that can cost between $250 and $600.
Landscaping a small yard is a game of precision where design decisions carry more weight than in larger estates. Because space is at a premium, the placement of features must be highly intentional. Before a single stone is laid, safety and utility must be addressed. Mason Mark McCullough advises avoiding hazard-prone areas, specifically steering clear of wooden sheds, bushes, or low-hanging trees when selecting a site. Furthermore, homeowners must contact local utility companies to ensure the ground is safe for excavation.
The construction of a stone fire pit requires a methodical, multi-step process to ensure stability and safety. The foundation begins with a level gravel base, upon which the first layer of blocks is laid. It is critical that the sides of these blocks touch and that the height remains consistent. If the ground is uneven, builders can use leveling sand under low blocks or a rubber mallet to tap down high ones. A long level should be used to check the entire first row for accuracy before proceeding.
To ensure a professional finish and structural integrity, the build relies on staggering joints between rows, much like masonry in a wall. A key technique involves a 'test-fit' phase: the second level of blocks is assembled temporarily to ensure the fire pit bowl's lip rests fully on the edge. Once the fit is confirmed, construction adhesive is used between layers to secure the concrete block pavers. This process of temporary assembly, testing, and then bonding with adhesive is repeated through the third row to create a permanent, secure structure.
