How to build a bluestone patio and granite fire pit
In short: Landscape designer Jenn Nawada demonstrates the professional process of installing a natural stone patio paired with a reclaimed granite fire pit, from excavation to the final sweep of stone dust.
This guide outlines the technical steps required to create a durable outdoor living space. The process begins with excavating down to the subsoil and using a gas plate compactor to create a smooth, firm grade.
The foundation is built using a mixture of 3/4” stone and stone dust, applied in 3-inch layers and compacted repeatedly. For the fire pit, large granite stones are positioned using an excavator, and the center is filled one-third of the way with 3/4” stone. To achieve a professional finish, bluestone is leveled by tapping high spots with a mallet and filling voids with stone dust before sweeping more dust into the joints.
