How to achieve a temporary pop of color using hair chalk
In short: Forget permanent dyes and expensive salon visits. Hair chalk offers a way to experiment with vibrant, soft washes of color that can be easily changed. Whether you want a bold blue streak or a subtle pastel effect, the technique depends entirely on your starting hair color.
The method for applying hair chalk varies depending on the base color of the hair. For those with dark hair, applying the chalk to wet hair can help the pigment show up, though applying it dry is a safer way to avoid the risk of staining the hair. Conversely, for light blonde hair, applying the chalk to the ends of a high ponytail can create a dip-dyed effect.
To apply the color, select a small section of hair and twist it. Rub the chalk back and a forth over the strand, adding layers until you reach the desired intensity. You can also wet the chalk itself rather than the hair to impart color. For a more diffused, washed-out look, use a brush to blend the colors after application, or use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the pigment through the section.
Beyond simple streaks, the colored sections can be integrated into more complex styles. A loose three-strand braid, secured with a clear rubber band and then puffed up for fullness, is an effective way to showcase multiple colors. You can even blend different shades on the same section of hair for a multi-tonal effect.
While hair chalk is generally temporary, users should be aware of different materials. High-end art pastels, which are distinct from waxy pastels, may require setting the color with a heat tool afterward. However, these can occasionally stain light blonde hair, and while the color typically washes out after a few shampoos, results vary because every person's hair reacts differently.
