The secret to a jazzy sound is often found in skipping notes
In short: Jazz harmony relies on the 2-5-1 progression, but playing it straight can sound flat. By intentionally skipping notes and using specific upper extensions, keyboardists can create sophisticated textures that feel full and professional without needing complex theory.
To achieve a classic jazz aesthetic in the key of C, musicians often utilize the minor 2 to dominant 5 progression. This involves moving from a D minor chord to a G7 chord. Rather than playing standard triads, jazz 'comping' focuses on specific voicings that emphasize upper extensions—notes higher up the scale that provide color and tension.
One effective technique for the D minor chord is creating a D minor 9 voicing. This involves skipping notes to include the 1 (D), the minor 3, the 5, the flat 7, and then skipping one more note up to reach the 9th (E). For keyboardists playing with a bass player, it is often recommended to drop the root note (D) from the left hand. This allows the bass to handle the foundation while the pianist provides the rich harmonic 'color' using only the upper notes.
Transitioning to the G7 chord can be achieved by moving just one finger—specifically the pointer finger—down a step. This creates a dominant 7 sound that may also include the 13th (E). For a fuller, more expansive sound, players can add octaves in the right hand. By combining these 'all-skip' left-hand voicings with simple root and fifth patterns in the right hand, musicians create a big, professional sound. Once the physical movements are comfortable, the player is free to experiment with various rhythms to drive the music forward.
The goal of these techniques is to move beyond basic harmony into 'jazzy' territory by prioritizing specific intervals that define the genre's atmosphere.
