Transforming dated wood paneling is possible with a universal painting approach
In short: Many homeowners dread the sight of heavy wood paneling, fearing a paint job will fail. However, master painter Mauro Henrique demonstrates that with the right preparation and technique, you can successfully modernize these textured surfaces without removing the original woodwork.
The primary challenge in painting wood paneling lies in the complex topography of the surface. Unlike flat drywall, paneling often features moldings, beadboard, or deep crevices that are difficult to cover evenly. To ensure a professional finish, the process begins with mechanical preparation. Using a sanding block equipped with 220-grit sandpaper, the painter must roughen the existing surface and lightly scuff the profiles of any moldings to create a better bond for the new layers.
The application follows a specific two-stage method: priming and painting. The first step is 'cutting in,' which involves using a brush to manually work primer into the cracks, crevices, and areas where a roller cannot reach. Once the primer is applied to the flat surfaces via a roller, it requires a drying period of approximately one hour. This interval is also an ideal window for cleaning tools like brushes, rollers, and trays.
The final painting stage mirrors the priming process. After the primer has dried, the painter again uses a brush to coat the intricate moldings and grooves before following up with a roller over the broader surfaces. It is critical to monitor the wet paint for drips or runs, smoothing them out immediately with either a brush or roller. Depending on environmental conditions, a second coat of paint may be applied after a drying time of roughly two hours.
While the cost of such a project varies depending on the size of the room, it can generally be accomplished for under $100. While some may view painting paneling as a departure from traditional aesthetics, the decision ultimately rests with the homeowner's vision for their space.
