The hidden engineering required to power your detached garage
In short: Bringing electricity to an outbuilding is more than just stretching a cord. It requires a precise sequence of trenching, conduit protection, and structural boring to ensure safety and durability. From utility checks to sand-bedding, here is how professionals bridge the gap between structures.
The process begins with critical safety protocols: homeowners must first contact local utility companies to verify that no buried pipes or wires exist before any excavation starts. Following clearance, workers employ a gas-driven trencher to carve a channel measuring minimum 12 inches deep between the primary residence and garage. This physical path serves as the backbone for the electrical feed.
To transition the power into the buildings, a 1½-inch-diameter hole must be bored through the house wall and into the basement. A ¾-inch-diameter plastic conduit is then used to bridge this gap. Because these conduits are rigid, a propane-powered heat gun may be necessary to bend the plastic to conform to the building's foundation. Once the path is set, UF (underground feed) electrical cable is pushed through the conduit and pulled toward the main electrical panel.
Durability depends on proper sealing and protection. At both the house and garage connection points, conduit outlet bodies are secured with galvanized or stainless-steel screws and sealed with exterior-grade acrylic-latex caulk to prevent water ingress. Finally, the cable is protected by burying it under about 2 inches of sand, topped with red caution tape before backfilling the trench with soil. While a homeowner can perform much of this labor, a licensed electrician is required for the final wire connections at both ends.
This methodical approach ensures that the electrical system remains weather-resistant and physically protected from ground movement or moisture, maintaining the integrity of the home's power supply.
