To begin this process, one must step away from the intrusive, mechanical noises of human civilization. Whether you are in a city or the suburbs, the instruction is to go outside—to a roof, a backyard, or a patch of grass—regardless of the weather, be it rain, snow, or wind. Once there, the goal is to listen. Beyond the sounds of geese migrating or an owl in a nearby tree, the most vital sound to find is the beating of your own heart.
This internal rhythm is significant because it represents the first sound you ever heard: your mother's heartbeat while you were in the womb. This primal beat serves as a bridge to the sacred. It is the same rhythm used when drumming to visit ancestors or to travel to other worlds. By placing your hands over your heart and focusing on that beat, you are performing an invocation of the sacred. This act is a calling to the Great Mother, a way to remember the first sacred sound you ever experienced. When you allow yourself to be present with this rhythm, you may experience physical sensations or even a release of emotion through crying.
