The geometry of motion: how to fold a flapping origami crane

In short: Transforming a single flat sheet into a dynamic, moving figure requires more than just simple creases. It demands a precise sequence of structural transformations, moving from basic diagonal folds to complex bases. By mastering these specific geometric shifts, you can create a mechanical bird base capable of actual flapping motion.

The process begins with establishing a foundation of precision. Starting with the colored side of the paper facing up, the creator must execute exact diagonal folds. By folding a bottom corner to the top and using a finger to smooth the crease from the center to the edges, one ensures the sharp corners necessary for subsequent steps. This is followed by a second diagonal fold in the opposite direction and a series of 'book folds'—folding the top edge to the bottom edge and vice versa—to create a grid of creases.

The structural transformation into a 'square base,' also known as a 'preliminary base,' occurs without adding new folds. Instead, by pinching the top point where the diagonal lines meet and rotating the paper so all four corners meet at a single spot, the paper is reorganized into a flattened square. From this state, the creator performs 'kite folds' by bringing the side edges into the center line, followed by folding the top point down over them. This process is repeated on the reverse side of the model.

The most intricate stage involves the 'petal fold.' By unfolding the preliminary kite folds, the creator isolates a single flap of paper. Lifting this flap upward allows the side edges to naturally collapse inward along the pre-existing creases. Once flattened, this creates the 'bird base,' a specialized structure characterized by two open points that will eventually serve as the crane's head and tail. This complex layering of folds is what ultimately enables the mechanical 'flapping' characteristic of the finished crane.
