Engineering a DIY fog machine from a household iron

How To Make a Fog Machine With a Household Iron · 3:33 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: You can transform a standard household iron into a functional fog machine using basic kitchenware and a bit of physics. By repurposing heat and fluid dynamics, this DIY project creates a misty atmosphere for events without the need for professional-grade equipment.

The construction relies on a multi-layered assembly of common household items. The core heating element is a standard iron, which is positioned handle-side down in the center of an aluminum pan. To ensure stability and prevent the iron from shifting, the pan is filled with pebbles or gravel, supported by a cookie sheet to prevent bending. If the iron features an automatic shutoff, a hot plate is substituted as the heat source instead.

The mechanism for fog production involves a drip system and a distribution fan. A 20-ounce plastic bottle is cut in half and filled with 1 to 2 inches of water to calibrate the drip rate, which is then replaced with fog juice. This bottle is mounted onto a second aluminum pan, which is placed upside down over the first. Needle holes in the bottle are aligned with 1/4-inch holes in the aluminum to allow the juice to drip onto the iron's heating element. A case fan, powered by a 12-volt battery, is mounted to the top pan to blow the resulting fog outward.

Precision in assembly is critical for safety and performance. The gaps around the cord entry point must be sealed with aluminum foil and hot glue, while the final assembly of the two pans requires a small crack to allow for air circulation and prevent condensation. The temperature must be calibrated carefully; if the glue begins to melt, the iron's heat setting must be reduced. This DIY setup mimics industrial fog production by using a heat source to vaporize liquid, then using a fan to disperse the mist into the environment.
