How to master the art of repairing a patchy lawn
In short: A worn, uneven lawn can ruin your garden's curb appeal. Whether caused by summer heat, heavy foot traffic, or winter frost, repairing bare patches requires more than just scattering seeds. Success lies in precise soil preparation, seasonal timing, and careful post-care to ensure new growth takes hold.
The ideal window for lawn repair is during the damp, cool periods of spring or autumn. These conditions promote better recovery for the grass. When addressing bare patches, you have two primary options: reseeding or returfing. While returfing with healthy pieces of turf from elsewhere in your garden provides instant results, sowing seed is often a more cost-effective and accessible method for many homeowners.
The process begins with site preparation. First, mow the existing lawn relatively short. Use a grub hoe to remove damaged grass and weeds, being careful to leave the topsoil intact. For a cleaner repair, you can use a steel edger to cut a distinct border between the healthy lawn and the patch. Once the area is cleared, use a spading fork to loosen the soil, twisting the handle to break up any clumps.
Soil amendments and seeding are critical for long-term success. You can add granulated lime to the soil to amend it, and then sprinkle the grass seed at a thickness of approximately 1/8 inch. To protect the seeds from birds, you might cover them with a light layer of topsoil, compost, or coconut-fiber mulch. If the patch was caused by shade, ensure you select a seed mix specifically designed for shady sites.
Maintenance requires consistent attention. Water the area frequently to keep the soil moist, using a gentle spray to avoid dislodging the seeds. When the new grass is ready to be mown, adjust your mower height so you remove no more than one third of the grass blades. Crucially, avoid pivoting or turning the mower on the new patch to prevent the wheels from tearing up the fresh growth. To achieve optimal outcomes, spread fertiliser on your grass roughly fourteen days following its initial cut.
