For many learners, the primary hurdle is identifying where 'beat one' actually lives within the cycle. While many theories exist on how to count it, the core difficulty lies in the discrepancy between the mathematical count and the musical feel.
In the Soleares style, the count of 'one, two, three' aligns with the actual beginning of the music, such as the start of a falseta. In Bulerias, however, the musical beginning—where the singer starts and the guitar initiates its primary phrases—occurs on what is technically beat twelve.
To navigate this, players often count eleven and twelve together as 'one, two.' This allows the musician to feel the 'real' one at the end of the cycle while maintaining the structural integrity of the twelve-note pattern. To build the Bulerias compas, a guitarist begins by establishing an A chord position on beat twelve. From there, the cycle is built by adding specific structural elements. A key component is the closing of the cycle on beat ten, which involves a rasgueado followed by a mute. By practicing this cycle slowly before increasing the speed, a player can internalize the transition from the final beat back to the start, eventually allowing for the embellishments that define the style.
