Mastering the asymmetrical 12-beat cycle of Spanish flamenco

How to Play Soleares Compas | Flamenco Guitar · 5:08 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Flamenco guitar relies on complex rhythmic cycles called palos. One of the most evocative is Soleares, which breaks away from standard four-beat counting. To master it, you must learn to shift your internal pulse between groups of three and groups of two, creating a sophisticated, swaying tension.

Soleares, also known as Solea, is a flamenco palo characterized by a 12-beat cycle. For musicians accustomed to standard four-beat measures, this structure requires a mental shift in how time is subdivided. In Spain, the 12 beats are divided into two distinct halves. The first six beats are grouped into two sets of three notes. Conversely, the final six beats are grouped into three sets of two notes. This asymmetrical division is what gives the rhythm its unique, driving momentum.

The placement of accents is the key to the 'compas' or rhythmic feel. In the first half of the cycle, the accent falls on the third beat of each group (beats 3 and 6). In the second half, the accent shifts to the second beat of each group (beats 7, 9, and 11). To practice this, a guitarist counts the cycle as: one, two, three (accent); four, five, six (accent); seven (accent), eight; nine (accent), ten; eleven (accent), twelve. This alternating pattern creates the signature Phrygian flamenco sound, which is typically played in a slow tempo and a minor key.

Technically, a basic Soleares compas can be executed using an F chord with an added second for the first three beats, followed by a C Major chord for the next three. The final six beats alternate between F and E chords to establish the Phrygian mode. To add authentic flamenco flavor, players incorporate 'rasgueados'—fast strumming techniques—and 'golpes,' which are percussive taps on the guitar body, typically performed on the twelfth beat. Advanced embellishments include specific arpeggio rolls and three-finger rasgueados that provide texture while maintaining the underlying 12-beat structure.
