Mastering the Flamenco Tango: A Study in Rhythmic Silence
In short: In flamenco, what you don't play is as important as what you do. The tango compas relies on a sophisticated interplay of silence, percussive strikes, and specific finger patterns to create its signature drive. To master it, you must learn to navigate a two-measure cycle where the first beat is intentionally left empty.
The flamenco tango is distinct from the Argentinian tango, defined specifically by its 4/4 meter and a two-measure cycle. In this structure, the first measure typically centers on a B Flat chord, while the second measure moves to the tonic position, which is A. This shift creates the foundational harmonic movement of the style.
The 'compas' refers to the underlying framework of the song, encompassing its key, tempo, and time signature. A defining characteristic of flamenco time is the silent first beat of the first measure. During this silence, players often perform a 'golpe'—a percussive strike on the guitar body—to maintain the rhythmic pulse without producing a melodic note.
The rhythmic complexity continues with the 'rasgueado,' a three-finger strumming technique using the A, M, and I fingers. In the tango compas, the index finger (I) is responsible for the downbeat of the second beat, providing pickup sixteenth notes. This is followed by a specific sequence: a rasgueado on beat two, a return to the index finger at the end of beat three, and a thumb (pulgar) strike on the G note during beat four.
The cycle concludes with specialized techniques like 'pulgar indifeco' on the first string. In the second measure, the pattern shifts to the A major chord, incorporating variations such as the A with a Flat 9. A characteristic melodic lick involves moving from G to A, a signature sound that identifies the flamenco tango style. Mastering these variations allows the guitarist to balance the rigid requirements of the compas with expressive, stylistic flourishes.
