Why Flamenco Guitarists Must Run on Two Feet at Once

In short: In the world of flamenco, picado is a signature technique that defines its distinctive sound. It requires a specific rhythmic discipline: alternating your index and middle fingers on individual strings. While it sounds simple, mastering the transition between notes is where most beginners stumble into a mechanical trap.

Picado is characterized by the constant alternation of the index and middle fingers to play scales or musical passages. A fundamental component of this technique is its 'restful' nature. This means that as one finger strikes a string, it leans on the string immediately above it. Simultaneously, the thumb typically remains relaxed, leaning against the sixth string while the hand extends slightly outward to provide the necessary attack.

The primary challenge arises during string changes. Because of the restful posture, a player's index finger may already be resting on the second string after playing a note on the first. The brain naturally wants to use that same finger for the next note because it is already in position. However, this creates a significant technical error: if you repeat the same finger, you break the alternating pattern required for true picado.

To master the technique, players must consciously override their instincts. If the index finger played the final note of a sequence, the middle finger must play the first note of the next string—even if the index is already resting there. Failing to do this is compared to trying to run by taking several steps with two feet and then hopping on one; it prevents the player from achieving speed or fluidity.

The goal is to program the brain to alternate automatically from the very beginning. While repeating a finger might seem acceptable at slow tempos, it becomes an impossible inconvenience to correct once the music speeds up. By enforcing strict alternation from the start, musicians ensure they can push forward into complex, high-speed flamenco passages without breaking the characteristic flow.
