The essential steps to restoring and maintaining a mahogany deck
In short: Watch as painter Mauro Henrique demonstrates the precise process of re-staining a mahogany deck, from initial debris removal to the final protective coat.
Properly re-staining requires the surface to be completely sanded before applying new stain. The process involves using 40, 60, and 80 grit sandpaper, starting with the edges and then using a floor sander for the main surface. After cleaning debris with a leaf blower, a penetrating oil is applied to the edges with a paintbrush and across the rest of the deck using a lamb's wool applicator.
To maintain the finish, the stain should be reapplied every two years. The technique involves applying a generous first coat, allowing it to dry, and then applying a second coat after 24 hours.
