Why your baseboard heating system might be tapping like a persistent, unwanted house guest.

How to Quiet Noisy Baseboard Heat | Ask This Old House · 5:44 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: If your baseboard heat makes a rhythmic tapping sound when it kicks on, the culprit is likely physics, not ghosts. Copper pipes expand and contract significantly as they heat up, and if they lack sufficient clearance, they will grind against your drywall. Here is how to silence the racket.

The primary cause of tapping noises in forced hot water systems is the thermal expansion of copper piping. As the temperature of the water rises, the metal expands, and as it cools, it contracts. For every 100 feet of copper pipe, this movement can span between one and two inches. If the original installation failed to account for this physical reality, the pipe will eventually press against structural elements like drywall, creating the persistent tapping sound homeowners often mistake for a mechanical failure.

To diagnose the issue, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey recommends removing the baseboard covers to inspect the piping layout. The goal is to identify points where the pipe is positioned too close to walls or corners, leaving no room for the metal to shift. Once the problematic section is located, the solution involves creating a gap that allows the pipe to move freely without making contact with the surrounding structure.

Repairing the system requires a methodical approach. After closing the zone valves and draining the water to ensure a dry workspace, the pipe is cleaned with plumber’s sandpaper. A small tubing cutter is then used to remove the necessary length of pipe. Once the gap is established, a copper coupling is added to reconnect the line. The final step involves applying flux and using a torch to solder the joint, creating a watertight seal. By providing this necessary clearance, the pipe can expand and contract silently, effectively resolving the noise issue without further friction against the home's interior surfaces.
