Why your garden wall might be failing and how to fix it

How to Rebuild a Concrete Block Retaining Wall | Ask This Old House · 5:58 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: A retaining wall built with the wrong materials is a structural liability. Rebuilding requires more than just stacking blocks; it demands careful drainage, a stable foundation, and precise layering to prevent future collapses. Learn the mason's method for a lasting, professional-grade reconstruction.

When a concrete block retaining wall fails, the remedy often involves a complete reconstruction rather than a simple patch. According to mason Mark McCullough, the process begins with clearing the site. This involves using a shovel to remove plants lining the wall, ensuring you dig deep enough to preserve a strong root ball before temporarily storing them on a tarp.

The structural integrity of the new wall depends heavily on the foundation and drainage. After removing the old wall pieces, you must dig a trench that is both deep and set a few inches back from the original location. A thick base of gravel should be laid in this trench and packed tightly using a tamper. To manage water pressure—the primary enemy of retaining walls—a perforated plastic pipe must be installed behind the wall, accompanied by backfilling with gravel.

The masonry work itself requires precision. The first course of blocks should be placed approximately halfway deep within the trench, spaced about every six feet and leveled with one another. As you add subsequent courses, use channel connectors to line up the blocks, ensuring that face joints do not overlap. A rubber mallet is used to secure the blocks and even out the top cap pieces, which are adhered using construction adhesive. In some instances, a wet saw may be necessary to cut blocks for an even fit. Finally, a fabric liner should be placed along the back and base of the wall to complete the assembly.
