Mastering the art of replacing your home's glass sidelights

How to Replace Sidelights on a Front Door | Ask This Old House · 6:21 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Updating the glass panels flanking your front door can transform curb appeal and insulation. While it sounds like a major structural overhaul, the process is a precise sequence of careful prying, custom trimming, and weatherproofing that any dedicated homeowner can approach with the right tools.

Replacing sidelights is a meticulous process of removal and custom fitting. According to general contractor Tom Silva, the work begins from the interior of the home. The first step is to use a utility knife to slice through old, dried paint layers along the outer edges of the stop beads and between the beads and the sash. Once the paint is severed, a stiff-blade putty knife and a flat bar are used to carefully pry the stop beads away from the sash. This process must be repeated on the exterior side of the unit to ensure the frame is fully liberated.

Once the old units are removed, the new insulated-glass sidelights must be prepared to fit the existing openings perfectly. This requires a two-step trimming process: using a circular saw to adjust the length and a hand plane to trim the width. To safeguard the fresh timber prior to fitting, apply an exterior-grade primer to every edge of the sidelights.

The final stage focuses on weatherproofing and structural stability. A continuous bead of acrylic-latex caulk is applied around all four sides of the opening before the sidelight is pressed into place. To finish, the original stop beads are reinstalled around the interior of the sash, secured using a pin nailer with 1-inch pins. The entire project concludes with a final application of primer and paint to both the interior and exterior surfaces to ensure long-term durability.
