Avoid the bathtub effect when planting your new shrubs
In short: A common gardening mistake can turn your planting hole into a death trap for roots. If you plant too deep, water collects around the base, creating a stagnant pool that promotes root rot. Learn how to properly prepare your root ball to ensure a seamless transition into native soil.
When transplanting shrubs, the primary goal is to prevent the roots from drying out while ensuring they can migrate into the surrounding landscape. If a plant is root-bound, with roots circling the edge of the pot, you should use a sharp tool like a saw or pruner to slice through them. This breaks the circular motion and encourages the roots to move outward into the new soil.
A critical step in the process is 'roughing up' the root ball. By disrupting the shape the roots have become accustomed to in the container, you facilitate better contact between the potting medium and the native soil. Without a strong bond between these two layers, a fracture line can form, preventing the roots from navigating the interface and potentially causing the plant to fail.
Placement is equally vital. You should ensure the plant sits high in the hole; planting too deep can lead to the aforementioned 'bathtub effect,' where moisture accumulates and causes rot. To further assist the transition, you can use water to wash soil into the root ball, creating a mixture of ambient and container soil. Some gardeners even suggest creating a 'mud patty' to ensure the roots remain hydrated and have a running start in their new environment.
For larger-scale garden maintenance, autumn is an ideal time for planting spring bulbs like daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses, provided it is done before the end of September while the soil remains warm. For tulips, October and November are preferred. To protect these and other plants, applying a 2-3 inch layer of mulch—such as compost, manure, or leaf mould—can suppress weeds and protect roots from winter frost.
