Why oily rags can spontaneously combust and how to prevent it

How to Safely Dispose of Oily Rags | Ask This Old House · 3:21 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Using oil-based finishes requires careful cleanup to avoid fire risks. This video demonstrates how to safely manage application tools to prevent spontaneous combustion, a phenomenon that even professional contractors have experienced.

General contractor Tom Silva explains that rags used with oil-based finishes can release heat as they dry. If these rags are smothered by other objects, the temperature can rise enough to trigger combustion.

To mitigate this risk, Silva recommends soaking used rags in a bucket of water, then wringing them out and allowing them to dry flat, ideally outdoors. Once the rag is completely dry and uncovered, it can be safely discarded, preferably in an outdoor trash can.
