Why your ceiling light might be a hidden fire hazard

How to Safely Replace a Ceiling Light | Ask This Old House · 8:18 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Replacing a light fixture seems simple, but the real danger lies hidden inside your walls. Before you reach for a screwdriver, you must understand how the temperature rating of your home's wiring dictates the type of bulbs and fixtures you can safely install without risking an electrical fire.

The safety of your electrical system depends heavily on the temperature rating of your wiring. In homes constructed before 1985, the standard wires were only rated to withstand temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius. This presents a significant risk if you install modern lightbulbs that generate heat exceeding that threshold. Over time, excessive heat can cause these older wires to crack or fray, potentially leading to an electrical arc and a subsequent house fire.

To prevent such hazards, electrical codes were updated after 1985. Modern standards require wiring to be rated for up to 90 degrees Celsius, which is the temperature common to most contemporary fixtures. Identifying which system you have requires a close inspection of the cable itself. For instance, cloth wiring is not rated for 90 degrees, and plastic wiring marked 'Type NM' is also limited to 60 degrees. However, plastic wiring labeled 'Type NM-B' is rated for the higher 90-degree standard.

When upgrading a fixture, the process involves several critical safety steps. First, the power must be shut off at the breaker. After removing the old fixture and disconnecting the wiring, the old wiring should be pushed through the box and into the ceiling. To complete the installation, a new NM-B cable should be wired to the existing wiring inside a junction box, then fished through the electrical box before mounting the new light and restoring power.
