The delicate art of reattaching an undermount sink to granite
In short: An undermount sink provides a seamless look, but when the bond fails, the repair requires more than just glue. It involves a precise sequence of mechanical tension, silicone application, and structural bracing to ensure your heavy countertop remains safe and leak-free.
Reattaching an undermount sink to a granite countertop is a multi-stage process that relies on both chemical adhesion and mechanical pressure. According to plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, the process begins with the necessary preparation of the surfaces. Before any new bond can be formed, the existing plumbing connections must be disconnected, and any residual caulking must be scraped away from both the sink rim and the underside of the granite using a putty knife.
The structural integrity of the installation depends on the use of undercounter-mount sink clips, which consist of machine screws and wing nuts. These clips are inserted into existing holes in the granite, where machine screws are loosely secured into brass threaded insets. Once the hardware is in place, a bead of silicone caulking is applied around the sink rim. The sink is then repositioned into the granite cutout, a task made easier by using a string wrapped through the drain to pull the unit upward into its proper position.
The most critical phase involves simultaneous effort from two people: one person must be positioned underneath the countertop to tighten the machine screws and seat the clips firmly under the sink rim. To prevent the sink from shifting during the curing process, wood braces must be placed tightly under the sink for support. After smoothing the caulking with a finger and reconnecting the pipes, the installation is not complete until the braces are removed. A full 24-hour waiting period is required before the sink can be used or the supports taken away.
