Is your altar a physical table or a state of consciousness?
In short: In Wiccan practice, an altar is more than a collection of props; it is a tool to shift consciousness from the mundane to the sacred. While many use physical objects to represent the divine, some traditions suggest that you are the altar itself, serving as the meeting point for heaven and earth.
The fundamental purpose of an altar is to act as a vocabulary of symbols, allowing practitioners to communicate with the divine. While many use physical tools, the Temple of Ara teaches that the true altar resides in the center of the soul and the heart. This concept of 'ara' suggests that every individual is a sacred space where the celestial and terrestrial realms converge.
When constructing a physical altar, the orientation is often determined by the intended ritual work. While many practitioners face east or north, the direction can be chosen based on specific goals. For example, facing south can be used for rituals involving courage, strength, or inspiration, while facing west—the direction of emotions and the heart—is used for spells regarding love.
A classic model utilizes elemental correspondences to represent the natural world. In the Northern hemisphere, the east represents air, associated with the mind, speech, and creative thought, often symbolized by feathers. The south represents fire, heat, and energy, symbolized by candles; however, in Australian traditions, fire is associated with the north due to their position on the other side of the equator.
Preparation often begins with purification, a practice used by both European and Native American Indigenous traditions. This can be as simple as washing one's hands or using salt and water to cleanse the space. Such rituals aim to remove the 'blindfold' of the mundane, allowing the practitioner to recognize the sacredness that exists in all things.
