How the sixty-four squares of a chessboard create infinite complexity

How to Set Up the Board | Chess · 3:20 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: A standard chessboard contains only sixty-four squares, yet the number of possible positions within them exceeds the total number of grains of sand on every beach in the world. To master this vast landscape, you must first learn the precise geometry and orientation required to begin the game.

To navigate the board, one must understand its coordinate system. The grid is defined by files—the vertical columns identified by letters—and ranks, which are the horizontal rows identified by numbers. For instance, the intersection of a specific file and rank creates a unique name for every square, such as A1 or E6. This system allows for precise movement and strategy across the sixty-four squares.

Setting up the board requires strict adherence to orientation. The board is divided into light and dark squares, and unlike checkers, every square is utilized. White pieces are positioned on the first and second ranks, while Black pieces occupy the seventh and eighth ranks. The arrangement begins at the corners with the rooks, placed on A1 and H1 for White.

The pieces follow a specific sequence from the corners inward. Next to the rooks, you place the knights—never referred to as horses or ponies—on B1 and G1. Beside them go the bishops, situated on C1 and F1. The most critical placement involves the center squares: the queen must always occupy her own color, such as the light square of D1, leaving the E1 square for the king.

Finally, the pawns are arranged in a single line in front of the main pieces, acting as a protective gate. This structured setup transforms a simple grid into a complex battlefield of infinite possibilities.
