The Hong Kong Finish: Mastering the Art of the Bound Seam

In short: A professional finish can elevate a garment from homemade to high-end. The bound seam, often called a Hong Kong Finish, hides raw edges with a sophisticated fabric wrap. It requires more than just a simple stitch; it demands an understanding of fabric tension, bias orientation, and precise pressing techniques.

The bound seam is a technique used to encase raw edges, providing a clean and polished interior for garments. It is frequently referred to as a Hong Kong Finish, a name that signals a high-quality, professional standard in garment construction. To achieve this, one uses bias strips or pre-made bias binding, which can be sourced from quilting and notions shops or manufactured at home. The process begins with preparation: finger-pressing the seam allowance to ensure it lies flat.

The bias strip is then aligned with the raw edges of the seam allowance. A critical safety step involves pushing the main fabric to the left to prevent the sewing machine from accidentally piercing the 'good' part of the garment. A narrow straight stitch is then used to attach the binding, often using the edge of the presser foot as a guide.

Because pre-made strips often come in large bundles of two, three, or four yards, the excess is simply trimmed away once the stitching is complete. One of the most technical aspects of this method is managing the 'stretch' of the bias. Because the fibers are woven on the diagonal, the strip is bouncy and will not lie flat with finger-pressing alone. It requires a heavy iron to flatten the fibers. Once pressed, the seam allowance is trimmed down—leaving only about an eighth of an inch—to reduce bulk. Finally, the binding is folded under, pinned near the seam, and stitched again to secure it, ensuring the finish is caught on the back side of the fabric.
