The sequential logic behind tuning a violin

How to Tune the Strings | Violin Lessons · 3:07 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Mastering the violin begins with a systematic approach to pitch. This video demonstrates how to establish a reference point and use relative tuning to bring all four strings into harmony.

Tuning follows a specific order, starting with the A string. Once the A string is matched to a reference—such as a tuning fork or a metronome with a tuner—it serves as the anchor for the rest of the instrument.

The D and G strings are tuned in relation to the previously set strings. Finally, the E string is tuned against the A string. Because the E string is thinner, the instructor recommends using a fine tuner rather than the larger pegs to achieve precision.
